Exploring Slovenia Part 2

Posted: 1. October 2021 by Ramona

We are back at exploring Slovenia in our VW T3 van, which we gave up for two days in Ljubljana. If you have been, following along we started our road trip in the Dolomites and then drove into the north of Slovenia crossing through Bled and Logarska Dolina. On the next stretch, we visited the capital, drove down to the Mediterranean and ended our trip in Bovec.

Exploring Slovenia: Ljubljana

We had no idea what to expect in Ljubljana but completely fell in love with the city. We had rented an Airbnb for 2 nights in the middle of the city and started exploring from there. We visited all of old town with the triple bridge, the castle, the streets and the central market. We loved the open kitchen that happens every Friday and ate our way through the market. In fact, we ate our way through Ljubljana. We read here that the city is known for quite the food scenery. This is also, where we had authentic Slovenian food – in one of the oldest restaurant in town.

Of course, we had to try the famous Stow coffee and it turned out to be a little coffee tasting for us. We discovered Pekarna Osem, the most amazing bakery and when Timo picked up coffee in the morning, he brought back a warm, fresh loaf of bread, which we of course enjoyed with butter. It was the best.

We had two days in Ljubljana and felt like it was the perfect amount of time to explore the city.

From there we drove to the coast.

Exploring Slovenia: The Mediterranean coast

I love it when you feel it in the air that you are close to the Mediterranean coast. The climate changes, the air changes, the trees and vegetation changes. We wanted to visit the coast not because we thought Slovenian coasts would be particularly pretty because I think if you go more South into Croatia, it would actually be prettier. However, we just wanted to be by the Sea and take a couple of days of just resting. Which is exactly what we did. We lied by the beach, read our books, grilled Civapcici on the campground and watched the sunset. There was probably a whole lot more to do in the region but we settled on beach life and doing nothing before driving back into the mountains for a final adventure.

Exploring Slovenia: Bovec in the Soca Valley

Driving into the Soca Valley was such a highlight because I have never seen water like this. It is truly one of the most beautiful rivers I have ever seen. In fact, you can drink straight from it. We stayed at a campground close to Bovec. The main reason people come to this region is for outdoor adventure like base jumping, paragliding, canyoning, rafting etc. There is so much to do there. We decided to do a half-day white water rafting tour, which we booked here, and it was great. We had so much fun rafting down the river, jumping off cliffs into the river and all that comes with the tour.

It was the perfect ending to our road trip because from there we drove back home over more passes through Austria and then back to Germany.

It was the perfect trip for us and we came home relaxed, full of inspiration and with more memories in our books. This trip is easily a highlight this year.

I would love to know who of you has already been to Slovenia… just leave an emoji in the comments or email me. I always love hearing from you.

Much love

Ramona
