Our dream Italian honeymoon

Posted: 13. November 2020 by Ramona

When I was a little girl, my family would go camping in Italy in the summer. Sometimes we would go into town at night and there I would watch couples strolling along the promenade being in love. I thought to myself that this is the ultimate romance and dreamt of going to Italy with my husband one day. I wanted a dream Italian honeymoon.

When Timo and I got engaged, one of the first things I did was starting to research honeymoons in the Mediterranean. I found the perfect hotel at this travel agency. It almost seemed too good to be true because the hotel looked like everything I ever dreamed of. We decided to book it but it was already booked out. I thought maybe it was not meant to be. One week later there was an opening and we were able to reserve the last available room at the Principe di Salina, a boutique hotel on a remote Sicilian island with only 12 rooms, sea views and home cooked meals!

Dream Italian honeymoon or not?

A week later, all borders closed due to Covid and we had no idea if this honeymoon was going to work out or not. While I never doubted our wedding and knew it would all work out, I was not so sure about our honeymoon.

We had a backup plan in Germany just to be sure to go away for a bit after the wedding. Weeks and months passed and finally in June European boarders opened up again. Then our flights were cancelled and rebooked and we ended up losing a whole day on our trip.

However, we did not lose our trip and although the travel was long with an overnight in Munich, we finally arrived on the beautiful island of Salina. A driver picked us up at the harbor and when we arrived at the Principe di Salina, the long journey was quickly forgotten and replaced by pure delight and rest.

Perfect hospitality

I have never been at a hotel where I felt as much at home as we did at the Principe. It felt like visiting a good friend. Every morning we enjoyed breakfast with the view over the sea. Homemade bread and brioche, honey and granola, freshly cooked eggs and a hot cup of coffee. It was pure heaven. Timo and I would sit at breakfast, talk, listen and breathe in the fresh island air.

The days were filled with rest and reading. Lounging by the pool or hiking to the beach. In the evenings, we would all gather at the large table to enjoy the most delicious food from mozzarella ice cream to tiramisu, fresh fish and homemade pasta. We would linger at dinner, deep in conversation enjoying uninterrupted time together. It was true perfection accompanied by a playlist of songs that could have been from my own Spotify account.

Exploring the island

We ended up not exploring everything and we did not go island hopping. Instead, we decided to stay and rest, linger and breathe. We needed it and it was the right thing for us. We rented a scooter one day and drove all over the island but we came back home to the Principe for another dip in the pool or a snack and a cocktail before dinner.

I could not be happier with our choice and would recommend Salina to anyone interested. We wanted our honeymoon to be restful and a place where we could just be together and enjoy time together. That is exactly what we did and we loved every second of it.
