How to be a better friend in 2020

Posted: 24. January 2020 by Ramona

I want to be a better friend in 2020. Last year was all about being bold, stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing change.

However, this year I am realizing once again the importance of friendship. The importance of community and of doing life together. I try to have a word for every year – something that I want to strive for, be better at or believe. Last year that word was boldness.

Stepping into this year, I did not have a word. I kept thinking about it but nothing came until this week. The word “friendship” kept coming up but I did not take it seriously because I always try to be a better friend and surround myself with good friends. Why should that be my word for 2020?

Nevertheless, here it is and I do not know why but my word for 2020 is FRIENDSHIP.

I want to be a better friend to the people around me and so I am asking myself these questions, which I think, will help us all to determine if we need to grow once, we answer them honestly.

How to be a better friend in 2020 – questions I ask myself

Do I know who my real friends are?

Who are the few close friends who really know me? The once I am completely honest and open and authentic with? The ones who are allowed to correct the ones and me I could call in the middle of the night and they would come running.

Do I know what is going on in friends’ lives at this moment?

Do I know their struggles and what they are going through? Do I know where they need my prayers, my encouragement and my help? Have I asked them about their life lately or have I just been talking about my own?

When was the last time I spent time one on one with them?

There is such a difference in just seeing your friend once a week at church or hanging out at with other people and spending quality time together. I am a sucker for deep conversations and I want to get better at having these one on one quality moments. This takes time, energy, investment and let us be here, let us be better at it, let us invest all the time and energy needed.

I want to encourage all of us to not be so busy this year that we forget about our friends. Let us be intentional with our time and energy and invest it into the right people. I want to encourage not to just answer with a “standard” answer of “oh, I’ll pray for you and whatever you need”, but let us show love and friendship in action by actually doing something.

Much love
Ramona
